The technology is legal
Sending TV over the internet is ordinary. Broadcasters, platforms and telecoms companies all do it. Using an IPTV player app is legal in itself, in the same way that owning a media player is.
The content is where the law bites
Channels, sports and films are protected by copyright and by broadcasting rights. A service that supplies them without permission from the rights holders is infringing. In the UK, enforcement has mostly focused on the people who supply and sell unlicensed services, and courts and rights holders have taken action against them. Viewers of unauthorised streams can also face risks, which is one reason it is sensible to know where your service gets its channels.
Beyond the legal risk there are practical ones: services that disappear without notice, blocked streams, and payment or data problems.
Questions to ask any provider
- Which company supplies the service, and where is it registered?
- Does it have the right to supply the channels it advertises? Can it say so in writing?
- What happens if a channel is withdrawn?
- What are the refund and cancellation terms?
If the answers are evasive, treat that as information.
