An IPTV player is the app on your device that loads your channels, shows the guide and plays the picture. The player is separate from your provider. Pick one that suits your device and that you find easy to live with.
What to look for
- Works on your device. Fire TV, Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac all have different options.
- Clear channel list and search. You will use this every day.
- Programme guide support. A guide makes live TV easier to browse.
- Favourites and recent channels. Small features that save time.
- Stable updates. An app that is regularly maintained breaks less often.
- Its own pricing. Some apps are free, some charge a one-off fee and some use a subscription. Always check the price in the store before you commit.
Common players
- IPTV Smarters Pro is widely used on Android and Fire TV and is what our guide uses for those devices.
- IBO Player is used on iPhone and some other platforms. It may charge its own fee, which is separate from your subscription. Our installation guide says so on that page.
- VLC is a free general media player that can open a playlist, though it is less convenient for live TV.
Availability and prices change, so check the current store listing before you rely on any of them.
How to test a player
- Install it and sign in with your details.
- Check that channels load and switch quickly.
- Try the guide and search.
- Leave it running for an evening to see whether it stays stable.
